Earwax, also called, cerumen, is actually a good thing most of the time. Without it your ears would be dry and itchy. Cerumen is a self-cleaning agent for the ear that has antibacterial and protective qualities. Most of the time your ears will become clean without any help. When you chew it helps to transport earwax to your ear's opening where it will dry up before flaking off, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery Foundation. There are times, however, when your ears do need to be cleaned. In most cases, this can be done at home.
HOW TO CLEAN YOUR EARS
TIPS

- Obtain an ear syringe and buy an earwax cleaning solution or 3-4% hydrogen peroxide from the drug store.
- Fill an ear syringe or rubber bulb syringe with the liquid.
- Tilt your head back and to the side, allowing the ear to face upward. It may be more comfortable to lay on your side.
- Carefully insert the end of the syringe into the ear and squirt a few drops. You should hear (and feel) a fizzing or popping sound.
- Hold a cotton ball up to your ear and tilt your head, allowing the liquid to drain out. Do not press the cotton swab into your ear, however.
- Repeat the process for the other ear.
- Do this a few times a week. With excessive buildup, it may be necessary to repeat the process twice a day for 4-5 days.
- Talk to your doctor or an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist (ENT) if you have frequent and troublesome buildups of ear wax
TIPS
- According to Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists, a cotton swab is the last thing you should be putting in your ear. Cleaning your ears with a cotton swab may cause more problems. Instead, use a moist cloth to wash the external part of the ear or rinse your ears out during a shower.
- Clean ears after taking a shower. It's much easier.
- The hydrogen peroxide technique should not be used more than once or twice per week at most. More than this can cause the ear canal to dry up too much.
- Do not use the hydrogen peroxide technique if you have a perforated eardrum or a history of ear problems.
- If you're not sure about any of this, consult your physician.
- For problematic earwax, consult an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Specialist.
- If you find your ear canals are drying out too much from the hydrogen peroxide, put a couple drops of oil (castor, grapeseed) into your ear.
- Foreign objects, such as pins, keys, toothpicks should not be placed in the ear canal.
